The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100 is one of SportDOG’s many products. And SportDog is an exclusive dog brand that prides itself on being relatable.
The brand likes to think of itself as a company of regular people who have channelled their love for dogs into creating some durable products for them.
General opinion seems to agree with this so we expect that the SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100 live up to the hype. However, before we go into finding out the content of this kit, let’s find out who can or cannot use it.
Table of Contents
Who Is The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100 For?
The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100 is recommended for dogs who weigh 10 pounds and higher. This already excludes small and toy dogs and a lot of puppies. And if your puppies have not been excluded yet, know that they are because this is not recommended for dogs below 6 months old.
Furthermore, dogs who are not at optimal health for whatever reason should not be using this kit.
What Are The Features Of The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100?
The following are the components you get with the SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100:
- The transmitter with its power adapter.
- Collar reciever
- Wire
- Adjustable collar
- Training flags
- Training manual
The Transmitter With Its Power Adapter
The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100’s transmitter looks a bit more complex than a number of other transmitters. However, despite the number of buttons and switches on this thing there are only a handful of things that you need to know to work the thing.
For one, the transmitter is kinda like the brain of the entire kit. So, it is responsible for (in connection with the buried wire) detecting a breech and sending the appropriate correction mode.
As a result, the boundary wire connection will start with the transmitter and end with the transmitter.
That said, one of the buttons on the transmitter is the ‘power’ button whose use is pretty obvious. There is also a ‘range adjuster’ dial with points marked from 1 to 10.
This dial is what you’ll use to determine the boundary width; how close your dog needs to be to the wire before the receiver goes off.
Then there are two dials on the transmitter for choosing the correction mode and correction level.
Finally, the transmitter has to be plugged in as long as it is in use which is why it comes with its own power adapter. That said, you’ll want to place this transmitter indoors seeing as it is not waterproof.
Collar Receiver
The collar receiver on this one works in much the same ways as every other collar receivers. First off, though, we should point out that this receiver is waterproof. However, you still want to be careful when and where your dog wears this.
Moving on, it is pretty obvious that your dog has to be wearing the collar receiver if the fence system will be of any use at all.
However, there is more to just wearing the receiver if you are going with the shock mode. And on that tangent, this kit uses three (3) correction modes (static shock, vibrations and beeps) and four (4) correction levels.
Now back to wearing the receiver. On the shock mode, you’ll need to attach the contact points (which the kit comes with) to the inside of the receiver.
And when your dog wears the receiver, those contact probes have to touch their skin for the shocks to be transmitted at all. That said, do remember that if you’re not comfortable with static shocks, you could stick with just the beeps and the vibrations.
We should mention that the kit has an anti-linger feature that prevents it from running out of battery even if your dog insists on crossing over.
Unlike the transmitter, the receiver uses replaceable batteries and comes with one. We expect that the battery is easy to find.
Finally, this kit has the capacity to accommodate an unlimited number of dogs. However, if you’ll be using this on more than one dog, you’ll have to buy extra receivers.
Wire
The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100 comes with a 1000-feet wire. Said wire is a 20-gauge wire which is kinda impressive but has its limitations.
For one, we wouldn’t advise that you just place this on the ground, especially because it doesn’t have any sort of protective jacket.
If you want to do it anyway, be careful not to place it around places where there is heavy foot traffic and bear in mind that you’ll need landscape staples to keep the wire in place.
The best idea with a 20-gauge wire is to bury it. And you do not want to go too low; 3 inches deep should be the deepest you consider so that the wire can still pick up signals.
Adjustable Collar
This one comes with one plastic adjustable collar. The collar uses a metal buckle for a clasp and for making adjustments. Also, you could decide to cut the collar down to size if that will make you feel better.
Training Flags
This SportDOG kit comes with 100 training flags which should be sufficient if you go 1 flag for every 10 inch of wire.
The idea of the training flag is to give your dog visual markers that represent the boundary. We should quickly emphasize that your dog needs to be trained to know where they should or should not go before you launch into actually using the kit.
Training Manual
Finally, this kit comes with a training manual. The training manual is pretty basic, written in easy to understand English and should be good enough to guide your usage of the kit.
Is The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100 User Friendly?
The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100 is user friendly. And if you actually run into issues, you could just refer to the training manual.
In fact, the training manual should probably be your first resort considering that this is an electronic device.
That said, we recommend that you involve a professional in the training process just so that everything goes well and your dog easily adjusts to being fenced in.
Pros Of The SportDOG Underground Dog Fence SDF 100
- First off, we like that this kit can accommodate an unlimited number of dogs provided extra receivers are gotten for the extra dogs.
- Also, the battery actually lasts a decent period of time.

A lot of customers actually really like this kit. And even though a number of them complained about the amount of time it took them to get everything set up, they seem to think that it was all worth it after they got to use it.
A few people did complain about the excess flap that you’ll have flapping in the breeze if a medium sized dog wears this. But then again, SportDOG was just trying to cater to a variety of sizes with a one-size-fits-all.
