PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire – Detailed Review

The creator of the PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire, PetSafe, considers itself the largest producer of electronic training stuff for pets. It has been doing this since 1991 and we think it is safe to say that it is a force to be reckoned with in the pet industry.

That said, the PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire is a collection of a different instruments that come together to be a training equipment. However, before we go into understanding what the different components are, let’s look at this:

Who Is The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire For?

This dog fence is meant for adult dogs that weigh 8 pounds or more. You’ll have to stick with the recommendation because this dog fence makes use of static shock that could be too intense for a younger and/or smaller dog. Also, the collar strap adjusts between 6 and 28 inches.

What Are The Features Of The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire?

  • The transmitter with its power adapter.
  • Collar receiver.
  • Training flags.
  • Adjustable collar.
  • Waterproof splice capsules.
  • Test light.
  • Training manual.

The Transmitter With Its Power Adapter

The transmitter is a small box that has to be connected to the wire buried around the perimeter for the entire set-up to be useful to you.

We must quickly mention that this dog fence doesn’t come with the wire. So, if you are thinking of getting this, you either already have the wire or intend on buying the wire separately.

This transmitter is designed to cover an expanse of 10 acres at the most and actually works fine. It comes with a power adapter and has to be plugged in when in use.

We should mention that more than one receiver can be connected to this transmitter. However, because this fence containment kit comes with only one receiver, you’ll have to by the other receiver(s) separately.

Collar Receiver

The collar receiver does a lot of the work with this fence system. So, using the actual collar, the receiver is placed around the dog’s neck.

This way, when he tries to get close to the area marked out, the transmitter sends a form of correction to the dog via said collar.

Now, this dog fence containment has five levels of static shock for correction. Because this is not a remote controlled fence containment system, the correction levels are progressive.

Which means that it will keep administering the correction modes if your dog keeps trying to get through the fence till it has gone through all the correction levels.

However, before the fence gets to that point, it will issue both a warning tone and a warning vibration (for dogs who are hearing impaired) when your dog seems to be getting too close; that is, before they get to the actual fence. It is only if your dog keeps trying to break free that the static shocks go off.

The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire comes with contact points that you could decide to or to not attach to the collar.

Finally, unlike the transmitter, the receiver is not rechargeable. It comes with one (1) 9-volt battery. And while the battery does not last especially long, it is pretty easy to find.

We should mention that there is a battery life indicator on the collar receiver which is a light that blinks when the battery life is low.

Training Flags

This dog fence comes with fifty (50) training lags. Now, you’ll probably need these training flags more if you are starting out with your dog’s training.

The idea of the training flags is to map out those boundaries for your dog; especially seeing as the fence is an underground one.

If every time your dog goes close to the flags they get some kind of correction from the collar they are wearing, they begin to associate the corrections to the flags and, by extension, that general area.

Some people remove the training flags at some point when they feel their dog has gotten the hang of it. However, do not feel pressured into doing anything. You can leave the flags there for as long as is necessary.

Adjustable Collar

This one is like a regular nylon collar. It uses a plastic tri glide for adjustments and a plastic buckle for a clasp. There are no designs with this one; it comes in a basic red color. Finally, you can wash this, just remember to remove it from the receiver.

Waterproof Splice Capsules

This fence containment comes with two plastic splice capsules and they are used to repair the wire fence or join two fence edges together (like if you decide to extend the boundary). And seeing as it is waterproof, it should be safe down there.

Test Light

This is a small plastic thing that you’ll use to check if the kit works. So, what you want to do is place the plastic thing over the connection points on the receiver and set of the correction mode. If the plastic thing lights up (there is a small bulb inside), the kit works.

Training Manual

The training manual is something you really want to pay attention to, especially if you haven’t handled a pet fence containment before. It is written English and is pretty easy to understand.

Is The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire User Friendly?

The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire is pretty user friendly, as far as pet fence containments go.

However, we recommend that you pay careful attention to the training manual so that you do not make risky mistakes.

Ultimately, though, we recommend that your dog trainer and/or veterinarian be in the know of your using this equipment. In fact, it would be safer for all the parties involved if your dog’s trainer starts out the training. There are a number of things you could learn from them.

Pros Of The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire

  1. More than one collar receiver can be used with the transmitter. This is good news if you have more than one dog.
  2. 10 acres of coverage is pretty impressive.
  3. Finally, we like that this kit comes with waterproof splice capsules.

What Are The Cons Of The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire?

The battery in the collar receiver (which is not rechargeable) doesn’t last very long.

What People Think About The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire

It looks to us like a good number of people like this dog fence containment kit. In fact, not many people seem to be put off by the fact that it doesn’t come with the wire which is actually necessary. That is probably because they knew what they were getting into.

Anyway, some people are of the opinion that the shock intensity isn’t too intense and is just right for their big dogs. And apparently, this fence kit is easy enough to work with.

Our Opinion

In our opinion, this PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Without Wire is a fine equipment that could benefit both you and your dog.

However, we are not entire comfortable with shock collars and so will recommend (once again) that your dog trainer or veterinarian be in the know of your intent to purchase this.
