One of PetSafe’s many electronic fences is the PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence. Allow us mention that PetSafe has been doing this (manufacturing electronic pet equipment that is) for so long (since 1991) that it has been able to establish itself as a reliable pet brand.
Knowing this, we expect that the Stay and Play pet containment live up to the PetSafe’s rep. And you’ll have to read through this review to find out.

Who Is The PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence For?
The PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence is for any dog that isn’t sick, too young, too old or smaller than 5 pounds.
Also, the collar adjusts between 6 and 23 inches. Most pet fence containments do not adjust below 6 inches which just corroborates the idea of not using it on puppies.
Features Of The PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence
- The transmitter with its power adapter.
- Collar receiver.
- Training flags.
- Adjustable collar
- Test light.
- Training manual.
The Transmitter With Its Power Adapter
The transmitter that this one comes with works pretty well. But before we go into details, pay attention to the fact that this is a wireless pet containment system.
What this means is that the transmitter has the sole responsibility of detecting when your dog has crossed the line (together with the receiver, of course).
One good thing about a wireless system is that if your dog still manages to cross over the boundary because they are too hyped up, they can easily come back home without being shocked. And this is due to the absence of a wire.
That said, because there are no wires, the transmitter doesn’t have the widest coverage. However, you might consider its ¾ acre reach enough. Just bear in mind that too many obstacles might obstruct the flow.
If even that is too much space, there is a dial on the transmitter with which you can either reduce or increase the band width. Plus, if you need the fence to cover more space, consider getting more transmitters.
Finally, the transmitter comes with a power adapter. So, you’ll have to place the transmitter close to a power outlet.
Collar Receiver
The collar receiver will have to be worn with the aid of the adjustable collar. Be careful that the collar is neither too tight nor too loose; too tight could be dangerous and too loose is definitely ineffective.
That said, the receiver on this kit does a good job of transmitting the appropriate correction mode. There are two of those; one is the warning tone while the other is the static shock.
Also, both correction modes have 5 levels of intensity to them. And you are allowed to choose what mode and what intensity works for your dog.
Now, the way the receiver works is by getting a signal from the transmitter when your dog tries to cross over the designated boundary.
The receiver then gives off whichever correction you’ve set in the intensity level you’ve set. However, the receiver will stop correcting after 15 seconds even if your dog is still trying to get out. This is so that they are not ‘over corrected’.
Now, this kit comes with two (2) pairs of contact points; one long and one short pair. You’ll have to place the contact points on the receiver and make sure that they touch your dog’s skin when they are wearing it.
So, if your dog is long furred, you want to use the long pair and vice versa. That said, this kit comes with only one collar receiver.
However, if you have more than one dog, no need buying different kits. Just get extra collar receivers and there is no limit to the number of receivers you can attach to this thing.
The receiver is water resistant but your dog shouldn’t wear it for more than 12 hours per day.
Finally, the receiver is rechargeable and comes with its own charger.
Training Flags
Because there is no fence that your dog can see, they need some visual markers to help them learn where they should not be wandering to. This is why this stay and play comes with fifty (50) training flags.
They are tiny things and through the training your dog will associate those flags with those places you do not want them going. That said, you can decide to or to not remove the flags when your dog is done with training.
Adjustable Collar
The Stay and Play comes with one nylon collar that is machine washable. It uses a plastic buckle for a clasp and a plastic tri glide for adjustments.
Test Light
The small plastic thing that this kit comes with harbors a small bulb and the idea is to use this small plastic thing to test the receiver.
So, you place it on the contact points (which should be on the receiver) and walk close to the boundary line. If the bulb lights up, it means the shock option works.
Training Manual
There is a small training manual written in English that is included in the pack. Because this is an electronic equipment, we advise that you go through the thing. It is actually pretty easy to understand.
Is The PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence User Friendly?
The Stay and Play is actually user friendly. It doesn’t take so much or so long to get everything in order which is good and ties in with the portability of the thing.
However, because of the sensitivity of the thing (being electronic and using static shocks), we recommend that a professional be aware of your using this as a training equipment. In fact, we recommend that, if possible, a professional do the training.
Pros Of The PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence
- It is certainly a good thing that even if your dog breaks out due to anxiety or heightened emotions, they can come back home without getting shocked literally.
- Also, the Stay and Play is portable seeing as there are no wires to be buried.
- We also like that this kit is flexible and can accommodate more transmitters for a wider reach and more collars for more dogs.
Cons Of The PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence
Because there are no wires to mark off spots, there might be some dead spots that the transmitter does not cover.

What People Think About The PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence
A good number of positive reviews trail the Stay and Play dog fence. Some of these reviews say that it has been able to contain their stubborn dogs and some others say that the containment system has been able to protect their dogs from wild animals.
However, there have been a few customers that said their dogs were still able to break free.
And there was one customer that said the collar went off even when their dog was in the house. However, this doesn’t seem to be a common complaint.
Our Opinion
We consider the PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence an impressive equipment, provided you know what to do with it.
However, please do inform a professional (your dog’s trainer or veterinarian) before you decide you decide to use something like this with your dog because these things (especially the electronic ones) are kinda sensitive.
PetSafe Stay And Play Wireless Dog Fence — FAQs
Will A PetSafe Collar Work With Invisible Fence?
Unfortunately, a PetSafe Collar will not work with an Invisible Fence because PetSafe collars are usually not compatible with other brands.
How Do I Know If My Petsafe Collar Is Working?
After you’ve set everything up, take your PetSafe collar to the boundary area. If it beeps then it works.
Alternatively, the PetSafe Fence comes with a test light that you can use to test if your collar is working. So, place the test light on the contact probes and if your collar works, the test light will light up.
You can use this to test all the levels because the higher the correction level, the brighter the light should shine.
If you’re trying to find out how often to change batteries, you’ll have to check the collar, at least, once every month till you’ve figured that out.
How Long Do Petsafe Collars Last?
You could get anywhere between 1 and 3 months of use out of your PetSafe collar before you need to change the battery, depending on how often you use it.
If you’re using the collar every day, you might need to change out the batteries every month. An occassional use would see the battery lasting longer than a month.
That said, as for how long the collar itself will last, all we can say is that it is typically good for years.
Why Does My PetSafe Collar Not Work?
Any of the following could be the reason why your PetSafe collar is not working:
- The battery is not properly installed. You could check that out and make sure that tab in the battery unit is not squished in.
- The wire has a partial break. You’ll have to check that out using a wire break detector.
Can I Use More Than One Receiver On The PetSafe System?
You can certainly use more than one receiver on this system as it is designed to contain an infinite number of dogs.
However, you’ll have to purchase extra collar receievers seperately as this one comes with just one collar reciever.
Will This Unit Interfere With My Wireless Internet?
The PetSafe Fence unit shouldn’t interfere with your wireless internet, considering that they both do not operate on the same frequency.
That said, you still do not want to place your transmitter real close to your router as that much proximity could affect things.
